Mustafa Bin Man

Dr. Associate Professor

Mustafa Man is an Associate Professor in Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology and Informatics, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). He started his service with UMT on 2nd February 2006. He was appointed as Deputy Director of Research Management and Innovation Centre, UMT started from 1 November 2016 until now. On 1 st April 2013, he was appointed as General Manager for UMT Jaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd. until Mac 2016 and Business Advisor to Vice Chancellor UMT from 1 April 2013 until Mac 2015. He started his PhD studies in July 2009. Prior to being confirmed by the company and finished his studies in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in the field of Computer Science in 2012. He has received Computer Science Diploma, Computer Science Degree, Degree (Master Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia). In 2012, he has been awarded a “MIMOS Prestigious Awards” for his PhD by MIMOS Berhad. He was selected as the winner of this award is a very diligent student, working diligently to complete his PhD studies. He has shown a strong and in depth interest in the field of research and development based on the integration of multiple types of databases. He has successfully completed his studies in the period of not exceeding 3 years. He also was awarded the Best PhD Graduate by UTM and also received a special benefit in term of Research Grant of RM 10,000 as the incentive scheme by UMT. His research is focused on the development of multiple types
of databases integration model. Integration is a combination process of various information from various sources that can provide benefits to the organization. It can reduce processing time, increase saving resources and improve data sharing for various purposes. Various models and methods for the
integration process have been developed by researchers. However, the results of these studies still unable to solve the problem of integration of spatial and non-spatial data. This is because the previous models do not take into account the property and structure of data information of different formats
and types, different locations and various applications. Therefore, the integration process is very difficult and there is no generic model that can meet
this requirement. Thus a new model called Spatial Databases Information Integration Model (SIDIM) was developed to solve the integration problem of this information. SIDIM is a model that can coordinate various data formats through the comparison scheme that has been implemented. Various types of data from different locations can be combined through an algorithm that has been developed without affecting various applications that are being used. This model has already been implemented in Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM) and Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia (JPM). The result of it’s implementation indicates that 95% level of interoperability and capability of information has been achieved through integration of information for Artificial Reefs Positioning System (ARPOS), Fish Landing System (WiFISH), Fisherman Boat Profile System (e-Nelayan), e-Daratan and e-Diesel. These systems are located in different locations. A study on consumers found that 90% are satisfied with the developed software because it provides statistical information of the fish landing and country protein requirements. It can be concluded that SIDIM model has successfully proven its effectiveness in the process of integration of various information. During his studies, he has managed to publish six journal articles that have been recognized and published in international journals with high impact journals and indexed. Journals such as Archive Sciences Journal with impact factor 0.474 and indexed by Thomson ISI have published one of his articles. While other journals such as Journal of Computing, Journal of Computer and Communications and Telkomnika Journal have also published his papers. In addition he also wrote two articles that have been published in Springer - Lecture Notes of The Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications and Springer - Informatics Engineering and Information Science. Besides, he has presented eight research papers to in the national and international conferences. He has presented two papers at international conferences in IEEE Oceans'10 in Sydney, Australia in 2010 and in Phuket, Thailand. While in 2011 he was accepted to present research papers at international conferences in Male, Maldives. In 2013, he was presented a paper in Abu Dhabi and until 2016, he also produce a lot of paper and journal either local or internationally. Prior to his publication, he has also successfully developed a middleware application based on the models known as SIDIF and has won Gold innovation (MTE2012), Silver (BioMalaysia 2011), Silver (BIS-London 2012), Gold (CIGIFKorea 2013) and a certificate of appreciation. In fact he was so diligent in exploiting new opportunities and existing researches in developing innovative software that is related to his research products such as FishD'TecTools and D'FishLen. D'FisLen product has won the Gold award (ITEX2010), Silver (MTE2010) and Bronze (SIIF2010), Gold mdeal in Itex and MTE and also won a lot of medals and special awards at national and international level such as King Sejong Award, Asia Invention Award and Korea News Award in 2014 and 2015. Therefore, there are 6 innovation awards that he has attained together with his supervisor during the study. The original concept of his research has also been published in the newspaper Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia, which provide a new dimension in the study of the growth and the effectiveness of artificial reefs in the fishing industry in Malaysia. His findings were not only adopted in the domain associated with the fishing industry but also in various types of integration model database, that is able to be reused in other areas and have a high commercial value. As such, he is eligible for the post of Associate Professor that he is applying for. For the research grant holder with UMT, total of 26 research grants were obtained through eSciencesfund, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Cradle Investment Programme
(CIP), which amounted to more than RM 5 million. He led 10 of the research grants, 14 as coresearchers and 2 of which are in collaboration with UTM. A total of 35 journal articles have been published in national and international level, 65 proceedings, 4 books for teaching and learning and 3 articles in the "Book Chapter", 6 articles in Infokus magazine and one article in the e-Asia Magazine. For the supervisory contribution, he was also a co-supervisor of four postgraduate students in the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, UMT and three of them have already graduated. He has also become one of the major research paper presenters in international e-Asia Seminar Conference 2007. He also has presented his research findings in other countries such as New Zealand (2007), Eqypt (2007), Indonesia (2008), China (2009), Australia (2010), Thailand (2010), Maldives (2011), Abu Dhabi, UAE (2013) and Interlaken, Switzerland (2014), Indonesia and Brunei (2015) and Vietnam (2016). Apart from that, he was directly involved to provide guidance and training to teachers, education officers, and district, state and headquarters for the Ministry of Education in the pilot project of e-Disiplin as the result of his R&D along with the discipline committee member Majlis Aspirasi Pemangkin Nasional (MAPAN). The software has been used by 318 schools throughout Malaysia for the pilot began in 2009 until recent and has become a commercial project of R&D universities and industries. E-Disiplin project will be implemented in 10,000 schools across Malaysia after the budget approval application in "Malaysia Third Rolling Plan". At national and international level, he has won numerous awards at international competitions Malaysia and product design and innovation beginning with his participation in 2007 until now. During this period he has received 18 Gold, 27 Silver and 18 Bronze contests in Hari Inovasi@UMT, SciTech@FST, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE), International Technology Expo (ITEX), BioMalaysia, PECIPTA, GENEVA, BIS- LONDON, SIIF, WIAF, CIGIF Korea includes PEREKA organized by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). He was appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education as one of the Innovator of MyInnovasi Competition 2012 being held in the Sultan Iskandar Institute (ISI), UTM as the organizer.
